El Galeón first year secondary took part in a project developed by the Adeje communications department, ‘Journalist for a day’ last week.  The main objective of the initiative is to help in the development of reading and writing skills in young people.  The course was co-designed with the department of education, under councillors Manuel Luis Méndez Martín and Coraima Afonso Navarro, respectively.

For Méndez Martín, “the Journalist for a Day project is a great opportunity for Adeje students, allowing them to broaden their cultural horizons and to receive complementary training in different aspects such as writing and reading comprehension, and learning too about the importance of using valid sources in communication “.

The ‘Journalist for a day’ project has been included in the ‘Geyser’ educational programme, a global and transversal initiative in which the aim is to train students in different aspects that allow them to broaden their knowledge. ‘Geyser’ is managed by the department of education and works in conjunction with the different areas that are part of Adeje council.

During the first two dates of ‘Journalist for a day’, the team of professionals from the Adeje Press Office gave an introductory talk on the importance of the correct construction of a message. They also delved into the proper way to write a news story and how to adapt the content for both print and online media, as well as for social networks. In this way, the aim was to broaden the students' general knowledge and give them tips on writing and understanding the message, but also on how they can detect when a news item is false.

The students had the opportunity to discover part of the work carried out at the press office, which is made up of professionals from different fields such as journalism, video, photography, design, social networks, web development, radio, both in Spanish and English.

Press conference as an evaluative tool
After the training talk, in the Adeje Auditorium, a press conference was held in which the Adeje writer, Adelaida Toledo, was the invited guest.  The students took on the role of journalists and asked the writer questions about her new book ‘Descubriendo la Casita de Tila’ (Discovering Tila's Little House), and then worked on creating a news item with the answers.

Adeje Town Hall has told students they will publish the news item that meets all the parameters learned in the talk and workshop.
