Adeje’s budget for 2025 is focused on essential public services, social care, and sustainability

The municipal budget for 2025 will increase by 7%, aiming to improve quality of life in the municipality

30 january 2025

Adeje Town Hall’s 2025 budget proposal, with a 7% increase over last year, is €122 million. The budget, set to be debated and voted on at the municipal plenary session tomorrow, Friday, 31 January, reflects a firm commitment to improving essential services, supporting the most vulnerable, expanding access to housing, and promoting sustainability. It consolidates a management model that prioritises residents' well-being and the balanced development of the municipality.

Adeje’s mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, emphasised that the budget is designed to strengthen the core pillars of municipal governance, focusing on improving public services, social care, housing, and sustainability. “One of our main objectives is to enhance the quality and efficiency of essential services, such as water supply and sanitation, street cleaning, and waste collection, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for residents. At the same time, we remain committed to social care, particularly for the most vulnerable groups, including older people, young people, and families. We are also introducing measures to facilitate access to housing— a key challenge for the stability of our community. All of this is underpinned by a sustainability approach, with policies aimed at reducing our carbon footprint, encouraging recycling, and reinforcing a circular economy model in Adeje,” he stated.

Investment in waste management and essential services
The budget includes a significant investment in improving street cleaning and waste collection, with a contract valued at €14 million. This will allow for the service to expand to seven days a week in areas where needed, enhanced cleaning of ravines in urban zones, management of seaweed disposal on beaches, and increased maintenance of public spaces. Additionally, funds will be allocated to modernising the water supply and sanitation systems, ensuring greater efficiency and sustainability.

Support for vulnerable residents

Another key focus of the budget is social care, particularly for those in vulnerable situations. Increased funding will go towards the residential home for older people, nursery schools, and social care programmes, with strengthened home support services and assistance for those in need. “We continue to reinforce policies aimed at community well-being and social services, with a special focus on protecting the most vulnerable and supporting families in difficulty,” Rodríguez Fraga affirmed.

Finance councillor, Epifanio Díaz Hernández, highlighted that the budget has been carefully planned to meet the real needs of the municipality. “This is a budget that ensures the financial stability of the town hall, allowing us to strengthen essential public services and continue investing in Adeje’s development without compromising economic sustainability. Thanks to sound financial management and a balanced budget, we can continue implementing policies that promote growth and well-being for residents,” he explained.

Education, culture, and sports
The budget also allocates funds for scholarships and school grants, along with an expansion of early childhood education places for children aged 0 to 3, supporting work-life balance for families. Cultural initiatives will be strengthened, including funding for the music school and auditorium, while sports programmes will encourage healthy lifestyles and provide opportunities for young people.

Addressing the housing challenge

Access to housing will be one of the major challenges tackled by this budget. Rodríguez Fraga reiterated that Adeje has a strong track record in implementing policies to facilitate the development of affordable housing. “The council does not actually build housing, as this is not within its competencies, but we work to create the necessary conditions—such as land acquisition and urban planning—to enable other administrations and developers to build homes for local residents. Our goal is to revive this strategy and ensure access to decent housing for those who live and work in Adeje,” the mayor explained.

Commitment to sustainability

Adeje’s commitment to sustainability is reinforced through initiatives that reduce carbon emissions and promote a circular economy by encouraging recycling and material recovery. The budget includes expanding the use of electric vehicles for municipal services and supporting local energy communities. “We want to consolidate a more sustainable and inclusive municipal model, advancing environmental policies that secure Adeje’s future,” Rodríguez Fraga concluded.
The finance councillor also emphasised the town hall’s solid financial standing, noting that Adeje’s accounts are well-managed and fully compliant with higher-level financial regulations. “The town hall maintains strict control over debt payments and supplier payments, keeping average payment times well below regulatory requirements. This financial stability allows us to plan and implement investments without jeopardising the municipality’s economic health,” Díaz Hernández stressed.
