Adeje ‘Recuperación’, people helping people and learning from it

Adeje’s department of economic development launches a new course training those in danger of social exclusion, in partnership with the construction foundation industry

11 july 2024
Adeje is launching a training and employment project in the construction sector called "Adeje Recovery 2024", which will benefit 16 people altogether. These students will carry out renovation and refurbishment work in the homes of the elderly and people with different or limited resources in Adeje, subject to a social report.

The goal of the course, in partnership with Adeje Council, the local construction foundation and the Canary Islands Employment Service, is to provide employment to people who may be in danger of social exclusion.
This plan aims to re-qualify people living in Adeje, who will be hired as trainee workers by the Construction Labour Foundation.

Present at the presentation of the programme were Adeje mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, councillor for economic development and employment Mercedes Vargas Delgado; the employment councillor Alberto Álvarez Jiménez as well as representatives of the Construction Labour Foundation including its president Oscar Izquierdo Gutiérrez; vice-president,

José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, welcomed the students.  “This is a good opportunity for you, not only to receive professional training, but to have more job opportunities in the future. This project is very important for Adeje because it reflects the commitment we have to our people, to their welfare, offering employment training and opportunities”.

The project includes the repair and renovation of homes for the elderly, disabled, or low-income residents in Adeje. "These plans provide a unique opportunity for individuals currently experiencing difficulty finding work to improve their skills and allow them to earn a salary while learning a trade. This gives them new motivation and the chance to fully integrate into society," said Mercedes Vargas Delgado, councillor for Economic Activity, Promotion and Employment.

For his part, the president of the Foundation, Oscar Izquierdo, highlighted the value of projects like this because they offer opportunities to "men and women to receive quality training that will give them real employment opportunities".  This is, he added, a project that highlights the importance of institutions and administrations working hand in hand for the good of its people”, and this partnership, between Adeje and the Foundation, is a prime example of that.

Work plan
Over an 8 month period the workers will receive training in building maintenance and repair, and in parallel, this will be complemented with a training itinerary to improve their personal and professional skills, which in turn should help them access the labour market.

"Adeje Recuperación" aims to offer opportunities to those in economically vulnerable situations by providing access to training activities and a full-time contract (40 hours per week) for up to eight months. The project team includes specialised technical staff, as well as trained workers and officers.

The training programme includes content on building maintenance and repair (bricklaying, electricity, plumbing, gardening, painting, etc.)cand related occupational risk prevention , enabling students to obtain the Professional Construction Card (TPC). Additionally, they will be accompanied by an industry professional who will supervise their work and support their employment integration once the training is completed.

This project seeks to train individuals in a sector with future prospects in the municipality, such as housing renovation and maintenance. To achieve this, integrated and personalised socio-labour insertion paths will be developed with a focus on gender, competence, and diversity. These paths will combine activation, motivation, information, guidance, training in transversal skills, professional training, access to technologies, practical experience in real environments, support, labour intermediation, as well as mentoring and follow-up.
