Adeje gives the green light to the ''Quiérete'' (Love yourself) project

The main aim of the project is the prevention of the use of psychotropic drugs.

Sedative-hypnotic  or psychotropic drugs (sleeping pills) are the third most widespread psychoactive substance in the Canary Islands, after alcohol and tobacco. This is reflected in the EDADES 2022 survey, which also shows that at least 23.5% of the population has consumed sedative-hypnotic drugs and that 4.8% of the Canary Islands population consumes them on a daily basis.

The survey also showed that consumption is much more frequent in women than in men, especially in women between 55 and 64 years of age, which is why the departments of health and equality, overseen by councillors Esther Rivero Vargas and José Antonio López Delgado respectively, and  under the co-ordination of the Adeje Health Centre, have launched the project "Quiérete Mujer Adeje 2024", which aims to enhance protective factors for women living in Adeje,  and in doing so prevent the consumption of these drugs.

The councillors have stated that, "the aim is to develop actions to raise awareness about the inappropriate use of prescription psychotropic drugs in women and work to enhance support networks ".

The "Quiérete" project will run throughout 2024 with up to 40 sessions taking place, each lasting 2 hours, in group sessions.  Women from the municipality 40 and 79, who have been referred by a municipal health centre or by the municipal services and resources unit, may join the project.

The psychological methodology used will be "brief therapy focused on solutions", whose main working methodology will be to focus the intervention on the potential of the group so that individuals can discover for themselves what positive aspects and qualities they have, which they can then apply to other parts of their lives.  This in turn should lead to increased psychological well-being and an improvement in the quality of life, all through the unit of the self-help group.
