Adeje council, through the radio programme Déjate de Cuentos, has won a top prize in the national ‘good local practises combatting gender violence’ in the ‘Breaking the silence’ category.  The awards were handed out by Spain’s department of equality and FEMP, the Spanish federation of boroughs and provinces.

The prize giving took place last Friday in the Ministry of Equality, in Madrid, and representing Adeje were the councillor for equality Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, the department head Alicia Rodríguez Alonso and the programme presenter and producer Monica Radován Pineda.

During the ceremony the councillor stated, “This was a project that was evolved by the department, the equality council, and the local radio station, and is a vital part of the strategy locally in the fight against domestic violence in terms of educating the public as to the strategies and resources available.  And without a committed team and political support this would not have been possible”.

The Adeje mayor used the occasion to underline the important “network of resources we have that are council based, used to work on the eradication of gender violence from our society in the over battle for a more just society”.

FEMP and the national government’s delegation on domestic and gender violence recognised “that the actions and commitments taken by local governments and bodies” in the area.

The president of the FEMP equality commission, María Eugenia Rufino said, “Every victim leaves a vacuum, with a name...it is for them that we have to strengthen our commitment to open a door to help them escape this violence”.   Victoria Rosell, the government delegate, said that it was vital that all public bodies were implicated in the fight against domestic violence, and reminded people that it was as a result of this kind of co-operation that resources such as ATENPRO, the telephone service attending to victims, had been created.
