Adeje and FECECO conference encourage young women to consider careers in construction

There is a generational issue in construction and there are not enough younger people coming through to join the workforce

Adeje council and FEPECO, the provincial construction federation, held an event to encourage employment in the sector, promoting construction as creating living spaces.  The conference focussed on two areas, incorporating young people and in particular women into the construction force.

Councillor for development and employment, Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, said, “The construction sector has changed, and now is more engaged in training for work positions – maybe not considered in the past”.  He said that the council was doing all it could to encourage young people to have increased opportunities in all sectors including construction.

One of the revelations of the day was the fact that there is a generational issue in construction and there are not enough younger people coming through to join the workforce.  The event sought to stress the new and different work training available as well as modern mechanised systems now used, reducing the need for physical labour as part of the work at hand.

Encouraging women to consider a job in the sector was another important element of the day, with various women speaking to participants about their jobs.

Present at the event were Conchi Rojas, FEPECO manager, Himeldo Morales, FEPECO council member, Antonio Koury and Mari Luz from Construyendo Empleo, Marta Rodríguez, a technician with Hidrotec Aguas SL; Elba Leandro, the CEO of  Spawellplus, and Cristina Sebastían, CEO of the Sunset group.
