Adeje recently took  part in a Greencities forum in Malaga with the councillor for ecological transition, Manuel Luis Méndez, bringing details of three projects, the productive forest, the energy communities and Adeje’s evolution as an ‘intelligent tourist destination’.

These annual forums are on the concepts of green cities, urban intelligence and sustainability, and bring together urban representatives, professionals, businesses, start-ups, public administrations and other entities who are involved in the evolution of sustainable territories and towards a more intelligent and efficient mobility.   More than 200 people took part this year, offering a global perspective on the main challenges to urban development.

Boroughs and towns are fundamental parts in the annual event and Adeje is part of a networking group, generating synergy with other towns and cities, exchanges news of successful projects, experiences, looking at how improvements can be adapted to other locations.

Adeje’s productive forest is located in the an old park in the town centre, and is being converted into a carbon sink, a 32, 000m2 area with about half currently planted, hiring from the local social insertion scheme and 100% financed by the council.

Regarding the energy communities project, this is moving towards a decarbonisation of the borough. As a zone dependent upon tourism, it’s fundamental that the destination becomes carbon neutral as quickly as possible.  The councillor noted the evolution of the Adeje Verde pilot project, with solar panels installed on a municipal building producing enough energy for residents in a 500m2 radius, with 500 homes benefitting from the pilot project.

The Adeje DTI (intelligent tourism destination), seeks to redefine how public services are organised through new technology and seek co-operative evolution of the residential and tourist parts of the borough.
