This year, 2022, Adeje’s Good Friday street theatre, ‘La Pasión’ is in a different format, with much of the action filmed in advance in different natural open-air and heritage-relevant locations in the borough.  The final stage of the annual production will be live, in the Plaza España in the centre of the town.  The decision to choose this format was based on the impossibility of predicting Covid restriction levels in advance of Easter Week and on Good Friday, on April 15th, bearing in mind the complexity of the production which takes up to two months of preparation and rehearsal.

This year’s presentation will use locations such as La Enramada beach the Boco del Paso trail, Teresme, the Bahia del Duque and Mirador hotel with the architecture reflective of Roman design of the time,  Ricasa, Tijoco La Hoya and La Quinta, zones in Fañabe and even parts of Aqualand.

Other emblematic locations include the Casa Fuerte where they are filming the dungeon scene for the scourging of Jesus, and La Quinta where the Last Supper will be set in a traditional Canarian house lent to the crew by a resident for the purposes of filming. There will also be filming around the Convento in the town, and the Camino de la Virgin.

The use of so many different locations has meant a complex filming schedule, with props and cast moving from place to place for different scenes. The Adeje council’s department of culture has organised a very detailed team structure working on all the shoots to ensure that all the scenes are shot according to the storyboard and schedule.

“This has been a fantastic project, novel and complex, which would not have been possible without the dedication and huge interest shown by the cast and crew. It’s quite incredible to see how people are so engaged in Adeje’s La Pasión, knowing it is theirs in essence. There is a huge sense of expectation, of involvement in each scene, enthusiasm at every level and during every day of shooting”, commented the cultural councillor Maria Clavijo Maza.

This year La Pasión will be presented to the public in a hybrid format, with the first part now being filmed, which will be broadcast to the public on huge screens in the Plaza España. And it is there that the final scenes will be played out, live in the plaza, Jesus meeting with his mother and with the women of Jerusalem, and the crucifixion.

La Pasión will take place from 12 noon on April 15th, and can also be seen on the Adeje council social networks, on TVCanarias, 13TV, Mirame TV, Canal 4 Tenerife and Canal 10TV.
