The Adeje project ‘El patrimonio es nuestra’ (the heritage is ours) is an initiative of the department of heritage and artistic history under Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, and has restarted its activities post-pandemic.  Recently students from 3rd and 4th class from the Tijoco Bajo primary school took part in a visit under the project, seeing and learning about different sites of cultural interest in the town of Adeje, visiting the Town Hall, and finding out more about the role and rights of citizens.

“Leaving aside the two years of the pandemic this is a project we have been running for nine years, during which time we have welcomed over a thousand students from primary and secondary schools from Adeje and beyond.  The history of Adeje is important for the whole of the south of the island” added the councillor.  “What we are showing the students is the evolution and growth of Adeje, through these cultural reference points, from an agricultural zone to what it is today”.

The Plaza de España, the San Francisco convent, the Santa Úrsula church, the surrounds of the Casa Fuerte, Taucho, the Camino de la Virgen, all emblematic points for visitors and residents who are also invited to visit the Canarian library on Adeje’s Calle Grande, where they are also invited to a talk on the borough’s official areas of cultural interest and an audio-visual presentation.

These  and similar visits are also open to all members of the public, not just school tours, and many diverse groups have been to learn more about Adeje’s past.

In parallel the students were also invited to sit in the salon where Town Hall monthly meetings take place, which has been in the San Francisco convent during the pandemic for space requirement reasons. They were also shown many of the insignias of office, the medal of honour, and met a member of the council who explained how the Town Hall works.
