This morning, 18 February, there was a working breakfast head at the CDTCA with Gehocan, with a similar event already held in Gran Canaria and scheduled for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura next week. Gehocan is the most important human resources company in the Canary Islands and represents a multitude of sectors in the professional world.

Also at the event were councillors Manuel Méndez Martín (development and job creation) and Raquel Rodríguez Alonso (economic development), and from Gehocan Óscar Ledezma and Alejandro Ramos representing the Canarian government, as well as experts in various HR sectors outlining how the recently passed new labour laws will affect different work places.

According to councillor Méndez Martin, “these meetings help integrate the new legislation into different aspects of human resources which are required following the approval of the new labour reforms”.  He added, “From the council’s point of view we have been in constant touch with different administrations to establish working synergies to help small and medium enterprises”.

According to Alejandro Ramos, the working breakfasts are about establishing a line of work to help businesses adapt to the new labour reforms regarding contracts, equality of opportunities, the changes regarding temporary work, and the other elements that are directly affected by the new legislations.

Main improvements
The national council of ministers approved a new labour reform plan on December 28th 2021 following an agreement reached with the government, unions and businesses, to facilitate structural reforms in the labour markets.  Businesses now have three months to change temporary contracts under the new legislation, or six in some cases (works and services).

The new regulation restores ultra-activity on a permanent basis. The conditions laid down in a collective agreement shall remain in force after the end of its express term.

The prevalence of the company agreement over other agreements is repealed. The standard contract in Spain is the fixed term contract. In the construction sector, construction contracts become permanent.
