Adeje is marking national Acquired Brian Injury (ABI) Day today, October 26th, with the council’s health and disability councillors, Amada Trujillo Bencomo and José Antonio López meeting with members of the Tenerife association for acquired brain injury.  They spoke of their on-going support for those affected, and their families, fighting for treatment and rehabilitation facilities. An acquired brain injury refers to any damage to the brain that occurs after birth and is not related to a congenital or a degenerative disease.

During the day there is a reading of a manifesto in the Plaza de España, underling the need for services that guarantee an integrated, co-ordinated and multidisciplinary care service for sufferers regardless of their socio-economic situation or where they live.
During the evenings of October 26th and 27th the Plaza de España and the front of the Town Hall will also be lit in blue as a mark of respect and solidarity with those living with ABI, and their families.

The association is calling for a national strategy to help those suffering from ABI and a national census of those affected to properly assess the resources needed and thus commit to continued assistance and adequate socio-sanitary co-ordinated aid.  “These measures are essential to guarantee a properly quality of life and social inclusion for sufferers and their families”.
