This morning, June 16th, the Adeje mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, along with representatives of the beach concessions, hoisted the blue flags awarded in 2021. They are flying on four of Adeje’s beaches, on Troya I and II, El Duque, and La Enramada, the latter for the first time.
Adeje mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said, “This is important for us, with the maximum number of beaches with blue flags, accrediting our status as a tourism destination, which is a mark of quality and excellence, and we will continue to operate along these lines. The message we continue to send out is that of security in all aspects of the destination, something vitally important. Care of our beaches is fundamental, and we strive all the time to maintain the high standards we have achieved and we will continue to work to achieve these blue flags as a mark of the quality of our destination.”
The mayor was accompanied by the Adeje councillor for tourism, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, who commented that “the council do carry out exhaustive tests and controls on the beaches, both in terms of the territory, water, and the services on offer. In this regard we test the water in our municipal laboratories on a regular basis to check health levels. The council’s resources also mean that we can and do act immediately if there are any suspicious readings or detections of contamination”.
Also present at the event were the councillors for security and health, Mercedes Vargas Delgado and Amada Trujillo Bencomo respectively.
The granting of the right to fly the flags is a mark of the high standards of water quality and services. The granting of four flags to Adeje also means that the borough has more blue flags than any other borough in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Among the services that are essential for the granting of a Blue Flag are information and environmental educational resources, excellent water quality, safety and security for beach users, life guards, and information panels in various languages.
Given the Covid-19 crisis, the Blue Flag organisation were particularly interested in the maintenance of good water quality at borough level- Adeje’s water purification depots are registered with the national department of health and the council also had to indicate the presence of a borough laboratory which carries out regular and systematic checks on the coastal waters to assure a constant and exhaustive control of the quality of the local seas.
The Blue Flag programme is operated under the auspices of the Foundation for Environmental Education and is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. In order to qualify for the award a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety-related and access-related criteria must be met and maintained. These include water quality, integrated management, and security for bathers, accessibility, etc.
