Adeje’s departments of equality and disabilities, under councillors Desiderio Juan Afonso Ruiz and Jose Antonio López Delgado, have launched the second ‘Magarza Sur’ programme. The programme, designed in partnership with the Canarian office for the coordination of special needs individuals, aims to increase participation opportunities for women with mobility needs.  The councillor for health for the borough, Amada Trujillo Bencomo, was also present at the launch.

20 women were present at the opening day of the programme, April 8th, in the CDTCA. Councillor Afonso Ruiz said, “We are continuing to work towards the empowerment of women with disabilities in our borough, helping them develop leadership skills and aid in their personal and social development towards full inclusion in society”.

The initiative consists of a series of workshops on personal development over a four month period, theoretical and practical, looking at themes such as self-esteem, sexuality, leadership, communication, and domestic violence.  In parallel there will be meetings both in person and online, depending on Covid restrictions, with different bodies and individuals, relevant to the programme.

“We are working towards full equality of opportunities for a group of people who are often doubly vulnerable, who are more likely to experience inequality regarding employment, who are less likely to be encouraged to pursue further education, and often find themselves in abusive or violent situations”, detailed Councillor Jose Antonio.

The participants are women with a recognised certificate of disability of 33% between the ages of 18 -65, most of them on the Adeje padrón. The project is part of the Tenerife Violeta Strategic programme, funded by the Adeje council.
