Adeje is organising an environmental gymkhana to celebrate International Day of Forests

The event takes place between March 19th to 21st,with the winning group or individual planting and adopting a tree in Adeje’s Parque Central

12 march 2021
Adeje council, under the TREEMAC logo, has organised an environmental gymkhana to mark International Day of Forest.  The challenges will take place in the borough between March 19th and 21st.
According to the councillor for ecological transition, Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, the aim is to “raise awareness about the need to conserve our forests and natural parks.  We are talking about and a fun and healthy activity that will encourage people to discover a little bit about the borough’s natural values”.

The gymkhana will involve 11 clues (in Spanish) in Adeje, starting in the Plaza de España. The challenges can be undertaken individually or in ‘bubble’ groups of up to 6 people observing all the Covid-19 measures in place, with use of masks, hand gel and social distance.

To complete each clue you will have to unblock a QR code hidden at each location, which will lead you to the next clue. Therefore to take part you will need to have a phone with the software necessary to read QR codes.
Anyone interested in taking part can find out more information online, https://www.adeje.es/evento/12253, or in the Plaza de España, scanning the QR code that starts the game.  Those who solve all the clues successfully will be asked to complete a questionnaire and be entered into a draw to plant and ‘adopt’ a tree in the Adeje Parque Central.

TREEMAC and International Day of Forests
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests in 2012.
The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organise activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.  Forests cover a third of the earth’s surface and from a biological standpoint they host the most diverse ecosystems in the world.

The event in Adeje is taking place under the UN Objective 3 Sustainable Activities label.  TREEMAC is a European-African network of natural spaces working to increase awareness, and value and properly manage the biodiversity and ecosystems.  The budget for the project, over €2 million, is part of the INTERREG MAC 2014-2020 programme, with funding from the European Fund for Regional Development. Partners in the project are the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Senegal and Mauritania.
