Adeje to Screen Goya Award-Winning Short Film ''Cafuné''

Judge Daliana Tomey Soto and lawyer María Montserrat Castro Delgado will discuss the legal challenges faced by migrant women in the Canary Islands

10 march 2025
Adeje Town Hall has organised the screening of the Goya Award-winning short film "Cafuné" this Thursday, 13 March, at the Municipal Auditorium, as a prelude to the talk, in Spanish, "Protección jurídica a la mujer migrante en Canarias. Una mirada desde la igualdad" (Legal Protection for Migrant Women in the Canary Islands: A Gender Equality Perspective). This event is part of the activities programmed by the Equality and Diversity Department to mark International Women’s Day (8M). The aim is to analyse the rights and legal resources available to migrant women in vulnerable situations and to highlight the specific barriers they face in legal and social realms.

"Cafuné" is an animated short film directed by Carlos Fernández de Vigo and Lorena Ares, which addresses the tragedy of forced migration from a human and emotional perspective. The film tells the story of Alma, a girl who, after surviving the shipwreck of a migrant boat, faces the emotional challenges of migration and the quest for a dignified life in a new environment. The title, of Portuguese origin, means "to caress the hair of a loved one" and symbolises the affection and empathy underlying the narrative.

The event will feature two prominent legal experts, judge Daliana Tomey Soto, who has extensive experience in courts dealing with gender-based violence, civil, criminal, and social cases, and is a member of the Spanish Association of Women Judges. Her intervention will provide a specialised view of judicial protection and the legal framework supporting migrant women in vulnerable situations.

Lawyer María Montserrat Castro Delgado, a professional of 28 years standing, will offer a practical perspective based on her career as a specialist in immigration law and support for victims of gender-based violence. As a member of the Equality Commission of the Tenerife Bar Association and a collaborator with the Mundo Nuevo Association, Castro Delgado has worked directly with women in situations of special vulnerability, providing legal advice and defence.

March Activity Agenda
The activities programme organised by Adeje Town Hall will continue on Thursday, 20 March, at 7pm, also in the Contemporary Room of the Adeje Auditorium, where the Isoranas Arcoiris Women’s Association will present the play "Mercedes Pinto: 100 años de higiénica rebeldía" (Mercedes Pinto: 100 Years of Hygienic Rebellion). This is a tribute to the Tenerife-born writer and activist who challenged the norms of her time in defence of gender equality, leaving a literary and social legacy that remains relevant today.

On Thursday, 27 March, the talk "Salud Mental con Perspectiva de Género" (Mental Health with a Gender Perspective) will be given by the Atelsam Association, addressing the importance of integrating a gender approach into psychological care and wellbeing. This training session will take place in the Adeje Auditorium, Contemporary Room, at 7pm.

The 8M activities programme will also include a self-defence workshop for women, which will be held on March 18  in Room C of the Las Torres Pavilion, from 7.30pm to 9pm. This training, led by the Dojo Daruma Kyokushin Budokai Tenerife Club, will offer basic self-defence tools and empowerment techniques through the practice of martial arts.  All these events are taking place through Spanish.
