Last week the “Porteadores de la Virgen” group and the Agromercado de Adeje received the 2024 Gánigo Award, a recognition granted to individuals, organisations, businesses, associations, bodies, or administrations that have helped to promote and foster the development of South Tenerife while also supporting the region's economic stability and highlighting its benefits, resources, and unique qualities.
The mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, expressed his “pride in seeing how the Porteadores de la Virgen and the Adeje Farmers Marker have established themselves in their particular fields and receive public recognition such as this year's Gánigo Awards. Rodríguez Fraga thanked both award recipients “for their commitment to the traditions of Adeje and their support for the primary sector,” also expressing his gratitude to CIT Sur for recognising the municipality of Adeje.
In the Business Sector category, the Adeje Farmers Market was awarded the Gánigo for its commitment, preservation, and defense of the primary sector in the municipality. In the Municipalities category, the Porteadores de la Virgen group received this award for their significant role in preserving Adeje’s traditions. The Porteadores de la Virgen (Bearers of the Virgin) are dedicated to the tradition of carrying the statue of the Virgin Mary in local religious processions, particularly during the celebrations of Adeje’s patron saint. They play an essential role in preserving cultural and religious traditions in Adeje, especially during events like the Fiestas Patronales in October, which honor the Virgin of the Incarnation, the town’s patron.
The 2024 Gánigo Awards ceremony was held in Santiago del Teide on October 25. Also recognised in the Municipalities category were David Amaral Rodríguez (Arico); Gabriel Rancel González (Arona); Bodega Vera de la Fuente (Fasnia); Hotel Rural Senderos de Abona (Granadilla de Abona); José María Mesa Martín (Guía de Isora); Sociedad Cooperativa Agrícola (San Miguel de Abona), and Dulcería Pastelería Hermano Pedro (Vilaflor).
