Adeje recently hosted a profession-led workshop on avocado farming in the Canaries, with emphasis on the value of the product here in Adeje. The event was part of a wider series of training and information sessions on the primary sector, agriculture, under a project looking at the integrated strategy for the Adeje economy, led by interventions from experts from the sector, sharing their experiences and concerns about the current situation.

The day began with an opening discussion led by Raquel Rodríguez Alonso, acting councillor for economic development, who welcomed participants, adding that for the council it was vitally important to run and promote these events in order to continue to improve the primary sector in Adeje.  She said that “the sector’s training programme which also works to re-evaluate local produce in Adeje is continuing, and working to encourage sector growth and improve competiveness in this important economic area for the borough.”

Among the experts taking part was Clemente Méndez, a technical expert in fruit farming for the Tenerife Cabildo.  He spoke of the different kinds of avocado, production and commercialisation in the Canary Islands, and the difference in fruits grown here given the volcanic soils and climate.

Representatives of ASGUACAN were also in attendance. This is a body that represents avocado growers in the Canarias, and their director, María Gabriela Pérez Méndez, addressed the issue of a strategic axis in the strengthening of the sector.
