Coloured salt and earth took over the streets of Adeje this weekend

22 carpets were created as part of the traditional Corpus Christi celebrations

This weekend, on Saturday June 10th and Sunday June 11th, the traditional making of the Corpus Christi salt carpets took place, marking one of the oldest celebrations in the borough.  This year 22 salt carpets were created alongside an earth and sand carpet in the Calle Corpus, part of a decades-old custom.

The carpet designs were based on religious art and icons, some different and individual.  All in all over 12 thousands kilos of salt were used, coloured using natural ecological pigmentation.  The carpets covered 374 metres of road altogether.

Groups arrived to begin to create the carpets from 5pm on Saturday, and both the Calle Grande and the Calle Corpus Christi were closed from 9am that day to facilitate the event, remaining off limits for cars until after the procession passed on Sunday.

Groups taking part included the Hermandad del Santísimo, the communion and confirmation groups, church groups from the borough, parents associations, the Adeje volunteer fire brigade, the Adeje Santa Ana seniors club, Autismo Sur, Montañero Abinque, and Club Triabona and Adeje youth.  Local neighbourhood collectives also designed and created carpets along the Calle Corpus.
