World Health Day is April 7th, as marked by the World Health Organisation, the WHO, with the overall aim being to encourage people to adopt measures that will improve their quality of life.  Adeje council’s department of health, under Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, is organising a series of activities to coincide with the date and promote healthy lifestyle habits.

This year the borough’s slogan is ‘Adeje te cuida’ (Adeje looks after you), and according to the councillor, “we are working to contribute to improving the overall state of health of the local population”.

The WHO defines health as “a state of complete wellbeing, physical, mental and social”, which is much more than dealing with any particular illness, and goes a lot further, in promoting overall wellness.

From this perspective Adeje’s programme this year “is a programme of activities which will include information and training in related areas regarding different situations, dealing with different health problems that are most relevant to the Adeje population.  The overall goal of the programme is to improve the health and wellbeing of our population, promote healthier lifestyles which in turn promote better health, prevent illness and therefore contribute to a better quality of life”, said the councillor.

Leading some of the workshops will be professionals specialising in different areas, such as psychology, medicine, children’s health, social workers and patient organisation representatives.   The different activities will roll out during April and May and include workshops on cardiovascular illnesses, strokes, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, addictions, etc.

Details of the events, all of which will be in Spanish, can be found on the main Adeje page, www.adeje.es, in the ‘salud’ section.
