Jonay Cubas: “we need more environmental education in the Canaries”

The Barranco del Infierno was the location for this botanical workshop

Jonay Cubas, from the botany department of the ULL, led workshop participants into the Barranco del Infierno. He said it is vital that people realise the problems that exist within the natural heritage of the islands if solutions were to be found, and there was a need for more environmental education in general.

In recent years, to protect the fauna and flora of the Barranco, visitor numbers are restricted, “something important”, remarked Cubas.  He also said that walkers should be aware of the treks they were taking on.

During this very active workshop students were able to learn about the different flora to be found in the Barranco, co-existing with endemic species some unique to Tenerife, such as Sideritis infernalis Bolle, known commonly as ‘Chajorra de Adeje’.

Cubas also said that in general in the islands there needs to be a very active management of the local flora given the heat waves we and the plants are experiencing, “and we need to find alternative solutions”
