A group of experts in volcanology will offer a course during this year’s Adeje Summer University analysing the 2021 volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma and the consequences of the phenomenon, now officially named Tajogaite.
The course will be directed by University of La Laguna professor in biology, animals, soil science and geology, María Candelaria Martín Luis. Others experts will take part in the course which runs from July 20th to 22nd in the Adeje Cultural Centre on each of the afternoons, examining what started on 19h September in the zone known as the Cabeza de Vaca in El Paso and lasted for 85 days, ending on 13th December, during which time there were over 9,000 earthquakes registered on the island of La Palma.
Some of the experts include Ramón Casillas Ruiz, professor of petrology and geochemistry in the UUL, who also represents the university on the board of PELVOCA, the scientific group that deals with volcanic risks and civil protection in the Canary Islands.
During the course participants will also discuss the different types of volcanic activity registered during the eruption and look at these in relation to other and previous eruptions on the island.
Vigilance and seismic phenomena
Itahiza Domínguez Cerdeña and Pedro Torres González are investigators for the volcanic vigilance body of the National Geographic Institute, and will demonstrate how the surveillance network established by the institute during the eruption worked, monitoring seismic movements and gas emissions, and comparing them to before, during and after the eruption.
The final part of the course will be with Rubén David Fernández González, director of safety for the Tenerife Cabildo, who will discuss the action plans always in place in case of any volcano-based crisis, and science journalist Victor Manuel Melo López, president of the Canarian volcanic association, who was responsible for analysing coverage of the event and will also discuss the importance of scientific research and dissemination in crisis situations.
This course is open to the general public and degree and post-graduate students interested in this area of scientific research. The price is €25. For more information and registration
