In recent weeks Adeje council’s Department of sports, with Nexsport and the Autismo Sur association, have started a swimming pilot programme for autistic children. The aim of the programme is to get the children used to swimming, use pool, and in time perhaps, become interested in joining public classes in the pool as well.

According to sports councillor, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, “last summer we used municipal installations for autistic children to host a summer camp adapted to their circumstances, and since then we have been looking at all the different possibilities we can offer to include all children in regular sporting activities.  Now, thanks to the cooperation of Nexsport we have been able to launch this project, with inclusion as the overall aim”.

Classes are held in the afternoon at the moment but it is hoped that the children will be able to join the regular group classes. The adaption period has been reportedly very positive with the children taking part benefitting from the sporting activity.
