“It’s your year”, Adeje puts young people first

The campaign aims to help young people through courses, workshops and projects

25 april 2022
Adeje council’s department of youth, under councillor Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro, have launched a new campaign, ‘Este es tu año’ (It’s  your year), an initiative aimed at helping young people through a series of workshops, projects, courses and information campaigns.

Last September the president of the European Commission, Ursula von de Leyen, announced 2022 the European Year of Youth, EYY2022.  She said, “The pandemic has robbed young people of many opportunities – to meet and make new friends, to experience and explore new cultures. While we cannot give them that time back, we are proposing today to designate 2022 the European Year of Youth.”

The EYY2022 aims to celebrate young people and provide employment opportunities across many different sectors. It is your chance to gain knowledge and skills to support your professional development, become an active citizen and contribute to positive change in Europe.

“I invite all young Europeans to participate in the numerous engagements, initiatives and actions that we will launch as from January 2022,” said Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. “We want to make their voice heard and to inform the decisions we will take for their future.”

Adeje’s campaign is part of the wider initiative with the major focus taking shape for the summer months, when young people are free from studies and can enjoy all that is on offer.

August 12th is also International Youth Day, “we have created a programme of events for the whole month, which we have designed to meet the needs and wishes of our young people, as well as underlining the values of inclusion, equality, sustainability, mental health, well being, and the digital world”, said the councillor.

There will be a travelling mural which will visit all the neighbourhoods with local artist Aida Díaz, and young people will be invited to bring their ideas along.    She said, “today’s young people are looking for a voice, visibility, and validation for those who are suffering most as a result of prejudice, discrimination and more”.  She added that young people today are also very committed to seeking social justice.
