On World Health Day Adeje reaffirms its commitment to blood donation

The campaign theme is ´Únete a la energía roja’ (become part of the red energy)

Adeje council is taking an active part in celebrating World Health Day on April 7th, a date established by the World Health Organisation which works to keep the public aware of the need for measures to improve the quality of life of the entire world’s population.  “This year, in Adeje, we are marking the day by concentrating on our commitment to the drive for blood donation”, says the councillor for health Amada Trujillo Bencomo.

The theme of the campaign is (translated) ‘become part of the red energy’ symbolising the blood as the energy of life. And given that Adeje is currently the official HQ for blood donation promotion in 2022 as appointed by the Canarian Hemotherapy Institute (ICHH), there will be a range of campaigns aimed at encouraging different members of the resident population to donate over the coming months.

From April to June the IHCC and Adeje council are running a series of events in schools at all levels, to make children aware of the importance of the campaign – from games and puppet shows in primary schools to talks and workshops in secondary schools.  Workers in different sectors will also be contacted during the campaign, local police, taxi drivers, civil protection workers, in an awareness raising drive.

From May there will be drives taking place in the main shopping centres in Adeje, including Siam Mall, Gran Sur, Rosa Center and Leroy Merlín Adeje, and in the borough’s hotels too.  The borough’s folklore groups, the patronal band and the equality council will be playing their part too.  Foreign residents are also encouraged to check to see if they are eligible to donate (according to the Cruz Roja anyone who lived for an accumulated period of a year or more in the UK between the years of 1980 and 1996 may not donate due to a possible risk of Creuzfeld Jakob disease).

“The aim of the campaign is to remind people of the important part blood plays in our lives and that we can all participate in the campaign to donate, directly or indirectly, making sure that the public hospitals always have supplies they need in their blood banks”, commented Amada Trujillo Bencomo.
