Over €300,000 has been returned to consumers in the last two years

Today, March 15th, is World Consumer Rights Day, and the relevant office in Adeje is known as the OMIC, the municipal office for consumer information, under the direction of councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo. The office have released details of their work on behalf of consumers over recent years, including a balance of money returned to consumers as a result of their intervention - €304,631during 2020 and 2021.
The OMIC office in Adeje concerns itself with all services related to consumers’ rights, duties and needs, including purchase of cars, household appliances, games, clothes and shoes, etc. The office also attends consumers who are having issues with electricity providers, telephone companies and digital service providers. They are on hand to assist in issues regarding client matters with restaurants, bars, tourism establishments, travel agencies and airlines. The OMIC have also helped members of the public in addressing bank contract questions and identity theft, among many other things.
“Behind all of the work and successes the office has had in helping the public are 31 years of experience of helping consumers which is why the OMIC in Adeje is something of a reference point to many other municipalities. In many cases they seek our assistance in setting up a similar office offering these services including advising staff where appropriate”, says councillor Trujillo Bencomo.
During 2020 the office handled 2676 consultations and 882 claims, and 2242 consultations and 841 claims in 2021. Issues with telephones (mobile and lank lines) were top of the list, followed by airline complaints, bank services, travel agencies and household good repairs. Insurance companies, dentists and contractors were also subjects of complaints.
