Obelia and an LGBT Multisport club are the projects, with funding from the Tenerife Cabildo

The Canarypride association, with its base in Adeje, presented two projects this morning; Obelia, offering training and work placement for the Trans collective, and an LGTB multi-sports club.  Both projects have been sponsored by the Tenerife Cabildo.

The Adeje councillor for equality, Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, said that “these kinds of initiatives are very significant as they vindicate a reality that we all have to be aware off, and problems that we have to solve together. This is about building a society where everyone has the same rights and opportunities.”

The Cabildo councillor for participation, Nauzet Gugliotta, applauded the work of Canarypride in creating “projects which move us towards an island that is free of ‘Lgbtiphobia’, something that we support institutionally in the Cabildo.”   The councillor said the support for the initiative was part of the advancement towards a society without hate, where social, professional and sporting opportunities were equal for all. “This is about empowerment” and the Cabildo will put all the resources necessary to make this happen.

The president of Canarypride, Mario Margineanu Dobrescu, said the two projects would be operational in the south of the island for now, with actions in all the boroughs of the region.  Information about the projects can be found here: www.canarypride.org

Obelia is designed to help Trans people who may find themselves in a situation of social exclusion, or at risk, and whose gender identification and/or sexual orientation has created difficulties in finding work or socio-professional integration.  The project will work in three phases, information, orientation and evaluation within the social and work places.

The creation of an LGTBI multisport club is designed to help young people get involved in all sports, and aid those who might have feel isolated and discriminated against in the past.  It will aid in risk identification, work on integration and inclusive sporting activities.
