Adeje takes over as provincial HQ for blood donations

The designation was made by the Canarian blood donation institute and the regional government authorities

7 october 2021
Adeje was today handed the responsibility of heading up regional blood donation drives from now until June of 2022 as the new provincial HQ for donations, taking over from La Orotava.  The official ceremony was attended by the Adeje and La Orotava councillors for health, Amada Trujillo and María Candelaria García Pacheco respectively, and the president of the Canarian Institute for Blood Donations, the ICHH, María Teresa Gutiérrez Izquierdo.

For Trujillo Bencomo, receiving the designation was recognition of “our commitment as a borough to blood donation.  We have been working with the ICHH for many years with campaigns, mobile units, and placing municipal institutions at their disposal during the pandemic. None of this could have been realised without the commitment too of the people of Adeje, those who have been donating blood”.  She also reminded those present that there is now a permanent donation point in Adeje, in the Fañabe cultural centre.

Maria Teresa Gutiérrez referred to the importance of blood donation in emergencies, “in treating chronic conditions, surgical interventions, etc., and urged people to think about making regular donations (meeting requirements of age, physical health, etc.)”. She said that events such as this were also useful in reminding people of the need for blood donations.

Planned activities
With the designation, Adeje now assumes responsibility for working with and supporting all the IHCC campaigns during 2022, the overall aim being to increase the amount of donations received regionally.  The council will also work to increase awareness among the public of the need for donations and the importance of a blood bank.

The council have designed an action programme running from this month of October 2021 to June 2022, which will see promotions in social networks, conferences, round tables for the Adeje public, and in schools and educational centres.  During 2022 Adeje will also work with the business sector locally in promoting local blood donation campaigns.

Adeje’s campaign will culminate on June 14th 2022, the World Blood Donor Day.
