Under the theme ‘Leer es mágico’ or Reading is Magic, the Adeje council is striving to promote reading through a series of programmes and events over the next ten days. Using both on-line and in-person formats, with reduced capacity as regards the latter, there will be a series of readings, book launches, workshops as well as parallel activities for children. “This year we are unable to organise the book fair as previously held given the current Covid conditions”, commented the councillor for education and culture, Maria Clavijo Maza, “but we are not allowing culture take a back seat, in this instance we are promoting reading through all the means at our disposal. The borough ‘s book stores are open, where they will be hosting book signings with different local authors. And we are offering a range of interesting activities on-line and in person”.
The programme begins on Monday April 19th with a presentation on comic ‘Tránsitos’ with the Asociación Algarabía, at 6pm, including the presence of writer Coralia Quintana, with a discussion on the book ‘Hijas de la Bruma’. To attend many of the events you will have to pre-register online, or join via streaming links posted in advance of the events.
On Tuesday April 20th publisher Circulo Rojo will lead a workshop discussing the option of self-publishing as an alternative for writers. This will be followed by presentations of works by various authors, Alberto Cerezuela, José Alberto González Tejera, Vicente Ángel Canariven, and Jonay Hernandez Ledesma.
There will be a children’s event on Wednesday April 21st at 6pm with songs and stories told by Fidel Galbán in the Adeje School of Music, and as with all other events, this can also be accessed online if in-person tickets are sold out – information, as usual,

At 7pm on Wednesday the council hosts the annual International Writers Workshop. This event has grown over the years and in is an integral part of the annual book fair. This year it will be streamed live on the council social media pages, and include participation from Joe Cawley and Gemma Metcalfe who will discuss a new collaboration, Deanna Dewey and Richard Atree will read from new works, Ronald Mackay will join us from Vancouver and Fañabe-based bilingual writer Virginia Méndez will also be taking part. … Authors will be discussing how to write fiction during a pandemic – the section is titled ‘Passport out of a Pandemic’ and the public will be invited to send questions during the event.
The Adeje convent will host two book launches, both online as well as in-person - ‘El colegio libre adoptado de Adeje (1970-1975) by Carmen Rosa Pérez Barrios on Thursday 22 April at 6pm, and ‘El Presbítero. Diego García De Acevedo (1713-1769)’ by Nelson Díaz Frías on Friday 23 April, at 7pm.
During the week there will be a series of events for children of infants and primary school ages. Other book signing events are also scheduled as is a video event, on Saturday April 24th at 6pm with an afternoon of poetry, an event organised by the Piedra Redonda resident’s association.
This year the ‘PFAE Adeje En marcha’ campaign will also involve people who have been completing job training schemes taking part in different book fair event.
