Adeje suspends weekend events due to high temperatures

The Mercadeando will now be moved to October and the weekend “Summer in your neighbourhood” programmed for La Hoya are suspended

27 august 2020
Adeje council have announced the suspension of the Mercadeando fair scheduled to begin this weekend, and of the summer events planned for La Hoya.

The council and the Tenerife Cabildo arrived at a joint decision to suspend the Mercadeando fair which was due to start tomorrow in the borough.  High temperatures and the dust that the ‘calima’ condition brings led to the suspension for this weekend. However due to the new need for a public health certificate for events, to be issued by the regional government, the fair will probably not begin until October. The new requirements were only published last Friday, and will be needed for any cultural events from now on. Adeje have applied for the certificate but the margin of time between the adoption of the new measure and the start date for the weekend fairs was too short.

“Above all we want to be cautious….this fair was organised following all the Covid-19 protocols in place at the time, as our priority is the health of all involved and visiting, and therefore we would never go ahead with an event unless all the requisite permissions were granted. That, combined with the current alert for high temperatures which recommends that people stay indoors, avoiding extreme heat and the dust in the air, made the cancellation of the event inevitable. We will look ahead to see how the current pandemic situation evolves and if we can bring the start date forward, but we calculate we will be able to start in October”, said the cultural councillor María Clavijo Maza.

The Mercadeando fair was due to begin this weekend, running from  Thursday to Sunday until the end of September, with crafts, food trucks, bargains, and much more for all the family on offer.  The events programmed for La Hoya, including children’s activities, open air cinema and comedy, have also been suspended.
