Adeje’s department of Culture and the Tenerife Cabildo are organising a series of weekend markets that will be happening in the borough from August 27th until September 20th. The ‘Mercadeando en Adeje’ fair will be held each week from Thursday to Sunday in the Jardines del Duque zone, by the corner of Avenida Moscú and Calle Helsinki. During the weekends there will arts and crafts stalls, live music, food trucks, children’s activities, crafts and bargains, depending on the weekend in question.
The events will all be in line with current health and safety regulations to control any spread of Covid-19 and to that end there will be a control on numbers in attendance at any one time, and people must wear masks while they are visiting the stalls and activities. “We must adapt to the current situation” explained the councillor for culture, Maria Clavijo Maza, “and all parties in the council have voted and agreed that maintaining cultural activities are essential and necessary. As well as contributing to the growth and personal development of people, the events are also part of the economic reality of many Canarian families. Our commitment is doubly important in this regard, while also always putting the good of people’s health before everything else.”
The area will be blocked off into three separate zones to allow for different activities at different times of the day. The first two weekends will be dedicated to arts and crafts, the third weekend will be given over to insular commercial activities and the fourth and final weekend will be a bargain fair with Adeje and Tenerife South shops selling their goods at low prices. These will be held in a 540m2 tent, while outside there will be a stage with seating for the activities for younger family members and for live music, and a third zone for the food trucks, with tables and chairs. The councillor said that “visiting these fairs can be a family occasion which is why we have worked to make sure that everyone is catered for”.
This is the first time that a fair of this kind is being held in this part of the borough, in the car park by the Calle Helsinki and the Avenida Moscú, in Costa Adeje. “We picked this zone for a number of reasons; for the dimensions and space available, allowing for more people to attend while allowing for social distancing, and we can also close off the space to allow for a better control of the numbers in attendance. The zone is also close to the tourist areas so we hope that those who are visiting us during these weekends will come along and enjoy the activities planned, as well as discovering some Canarian crafts. The space is also near to the motorway, and access is relatively easy for everyone who wishes to come along” outlined Clavijo Maza.
The children’s activities will be organised by members of the Adeje programme for employment alternatives (PFAE) Adeje en Marcha, which will follow the established health and safety protocols to ensure the security of the children taking part. Activities have been designed to avoid physical contact between participants. The children’s area is well controlled and with limited access, allowing for personal distancing, masks to be worn and hand sanitizer available and to be used, and each piece of play equipment will also be cleaned and disinfected after use. Some of the planned activities include hand crafts a photo call, dance and aerobics, and games.
