The regional government Department of security and emergencies has declared a forest fire alert level for the islands of El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria

Prevention
- it’s likely that local authorities will have banned fires during these times and there is also a prohibition on burning rubbish, having barbecues in certain areas, etc.

- If there are strong winds and high temperatures don’t light any outdoor fires/bbqs, either in your gardens or private plots of land

- Be very careful with cigarette ends and matches. Also don’t discard rubbish, paper of broken glass, where it would be in danger of provoking fire.

- In forest zones don’t use machinery like chainsaws, mowers, etc.

- During high-risk times if you are walking in the mountains know your paths, alternative routes, etc., and stay in sight of the road/zones of visibility. Stick to the approved paths.

- Only camp in zones that are approved for this activity, avoiding any danger that in the case of fire you make be trapped.
Actions:
- If you see a fire, call 1-1-2.

- Observe the direction of the fire and get out quickly

- If the source is small, and you can, put it out quickly, beating it, or using earth and water

- If you can’t put it out, your route should be downwards, not up, and away from the direction of the wind

- Stay calm, don’t rush, keep your eyes on the path/road.

- Try to go to zones with no vegetation, avoid moving towards ravines or hollows.
- Be aware of the wind direction and posible changes.

- If there is smoke cover your mouth and nose with a damp cloth, drink lots of liquid

- Do not attempt to cross the path of a fire or smoke either on foot on in a car, lack of visibility can cause accidents.

- Avoid making calls (apart from 112) to keep the lines free
