The Canarian Emergency services have advised that temperatures here will rise to 38º today and tomorrow.
Advice for all
• Stay in places with protection from the sun for as much of the day as possible. In the house keep blinds down if possible to keep the interior fresh. Use ventilators or air conditioning if available. If not visit places during the day (commercial centres etc) where air conditioning is available
• Open windows at night to allow fresher air in.
• Drink lots of water or liquids even if you’re not thirsty unless otherwise advised by a medical practitioner. Avoid alcoholic and sugary drinks.
• Avoid exposure to the sun during the hours of high intensity – between 11am and 4pm.
• Avoid long stints of outdoor physical exercise during hottest time of the day. Reduce any physical activities during these hours.
• Take exercise early in the morning or in the evening, avoid the sun and drink to replace lost liquids and mineral salts.
• Eat light regular meals, and take water-based drinks with mineral salts, eat fruit and vegetables to help replace salts lost through perspiration
• If you are going out during the day seek shade, wear light loose clothing and sun hats, and appropriate footwear.
• Make sure medication is stored at the right temperature
• Be careful not to leave food stuffs in the heat
• If you think you or someone you know has symptoms associated with heat – headaches, dizziness, generally feeling unwell, call 012 where you will be able to speak to someone in English /German/French/Italian etc.
