Prevention is “fundamental”

Help prevent forest fires this summer

13 july 2022
We have received a request from the Cabildo security and environmental teams to remind people who are living in rural and/or forest areas to pay special attention at this time of year to area  the around their home and outdoor zones.

In the summer months the work of the department is concentrated on the prevention of forest fires which can be too easily caused and mean irreversible damage to forest areas.

They are asking people to make sure to clear any build-up of dry vegetation that would spark or advance a fire, and remind people that they are legally required to keep the land around their properties free of rubbish. In forested areas this will include a perimeter of 15 metres around their home.

The experts state clearly that they are not suggesting, for instance, that all the trees in a property be cut down, just the accumulation of dry vegetation is avoided, and of any other materials that might help the spread of a fire.  They also state that if you feel there are trees in your area that might be in danger of hitting overhead electrical lines you should contact the relevant authorities.
