'Mi abuelo solidario' is back, a project designed to assist Their Majesties the Three Kings in delivering presents to all the children of Adeje. The initiative, managed by Adeje Town Hall's Department of Seniors and Department of Community Welfare and Social Cohesion, headed by councillors Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro and Raquel Rodríguez Alonso respectively, in coordination with the Adeje Senior Citizens’ Club, is now in its ninth year and this year aims to continue spreading joy.

“Unfortunately, many families face economic difficulties, so any support that allows children to receive a gift on Three Kings’ Day is more than important,” stated Rodríguez del Toro, adding, “It is precisely in these moments that we must keep solidarity in mind because children deserve it.”

This initiative began in 2016 specifically to help families experiencing temporary financial hardship on one of the most important nights of the year for children, the night of the Three Kings.

For those wishing to take part in this project, a donation (minimum €20) is required. Several people can combine contributions if they like. Participation will remain open until January, just before Their Majesties the Three Kings arrive.

How does 'Abuelo solidario' work? Children living in economically disadvantaged circumstances write letters to the Three Kings, which are collected by the royal pages. Based on a list of requests, gifts are purchased with the funds raised. In return, the children send the 'Abuelo Solidario' a handwritten letter or drawing, always keeping anonymity between both parties.

Solidarity initiatives at Christmas
Adeje Town Hall's Department of Sports has also joined the initiative. All funds raised during various sports events held throughout December in the municipality will be donated to 'Abuelo Solidario'. The events include:

  •
  • Adeje Kids Futsal Day (13 December, Fañabé Sports Hall, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.)
  •
  • 8-a-side football match between Adeje Department of Sports and Tenerife Top Training (18 December, Las Torres Sports Hall, 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.)
  • Solidarity Chess Tournament (20 December, Hotel Barceló Corales La Caleta, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)

  • Solidarity Youth Football Tournament (26–27 December, Armeñime Municipal Football Field, Friday 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.)

The Department of Youth is also supporting 'Abuelo solidario' with a 3x3 solidarity tournament, 'Espacio Joven Cup', on 27 December at the La Caleta Sports Hall. The tournament will feature male and female categories, from pre-mini (9–10 years) to senior (20 years and above). Teams will consist of 3 to 4 players, with at least two registered residents of Adeje. Registration is 10 euros per player, payable by bank transfer. Payment details are available on the municipal website adeje.es/juventud.

The Department of Social Services will provide families currently receiving support in the Department of Children and Family with a holiday alternative for their children during Christmas. This will take the form of a day camp from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., allowing families to continue working while children are cared for during the festive period.
