Luján Comas and Javier Melo will speak in Adeje this Monday about near-death experiences

The event will take place in the Sala Contemporánea in the Adeje Auditorium from eight in the evening, as part of the new conference series Diálogos en la Frontera (Dialogues on the Border)

12 december 2025

This Monday, 15 December, Adeje will inaugurate a new cultural and scientific forum, Diálogos en la Frontera (Dialogues on the Border), a space dedicated to analysis, reflection and debate on topics of universal knowledge, contemporary questions and cutting-edge science. The forum, in Spanish, which includes conferences, presentations, interviews and round-table discussions, has a clear aim of dissemination while maintaining the analytical depth required for the subjects addressed.

With a flexible schedule that will adapt to the relevance of each topic and the availability of leading experts, Diálogos en la Frontera is designed to become a reference point for rigorous and diverse thought. The first session will take place on Monday evening in the Sala Contemporánea of the Adeje Auditorium from 8pm, with free admission until capacity is reached.

“En la frontera de la vida. Las experiencias al borde de la muerte”
(“At the Border of Life. Experiences at the Edge of Death”)
The inaugural session is titled “En la frontera de la vida. Las experiencias al borde de la muerte” (“At the Border of Life. Experiences at the Edge of Death”) and will feature Dr Luján Comas and researcher Javier Melo, who will talk with journalist José Gregorio González about what are known as Near-Death Experiences (NDEs), phenomena experienced by many people at the edge of clinical death which suggest the possibility of the survival of consciousness beyond the physical body.

For decades, literature and scientific research on NDEs have grown significantly, fuelling a debate between materialist interpretations, such as the effects of medication, anoxia or brain biochemistry, and perspectives pointing to the continuity of consciousness after clinical death. Monday’s event will address the main arguments, evidence and reflections on these deeply transformative experiences, regardless of their origin.

Background and contributions of the speakers

Dr Luján Comas is a medical doctor, licensed in Medicine and Surgery, and a specialist in Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation, with 32 years of experience as an associate doctor at Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. Throughout her hospital career she has been closely involved in areas such as anaesthesia in cardiac surgery and was part of the pioneering team in bipulmonary transplants in Spain. Following her clinical career, she has devoted recent years to research and dissemination on topics related to human consciousness, end-of-life support and the understanding of NDEs from integrative scientific perspectives. She is President of the Icloby Foundation, an organisation dedicated to promoting scientific, social and consciousness-transforming initiatives, and co-author of works such as Vida más allá de la vida (Life Beyond Life), which compiles testimonies and analyses of near-death experiences from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Javier Melo, doctor in Economic Sciences from the University of Barcelona, is founder and CEO of the Icloby Foundation and co-author, together with Comas, of Vida más allá de la vida (Life Beyond Life). After personally experiencing a near-death event that profoundly shaped his life, Melo has devoted much of his work to studying consciousness, its nature and its possible continuity beyond the clinical limits of conventional life. His background combines economics, social responsibility and the study of social sciences with a strong interest in building bridges between science, consciousness and humanism.

A dialogue open to the public
The inauguration of Diálogos en la Frontera invites both the scientific community and the general public interested in better understanding the mysteries of consciousness, life and death. The conversation, in Spanish, promises to offer a multidimensional view of one of the most fascinating and debated phenomena in contemporary thought.
