11 december 2025

This Sunday, 14 December, from 6pm, the El Barranco History and Art Space, in Adeje’s Plaza de España, will host the opening of a Belén de Tradiciones (A traditional nativity scene) and an exhibition dedicated to Adeje’s Christmas customs, rituals and ceremonies over the last centuries.

This initiative, organised by Adeje Town Hall and members of the Municipal Folklore School Group, will highlight the importance of preserving traditions and passing them from one generation to the next. The proposal combines artistic creation, heritage promotion and popular culture, through static elements and audiovisual displays.

At the opening event this Sunday, members of the folklore group will offer a living re-enactment of the nativity scene, which in the following days will become a nativity display with artistic elements, representing Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus dressed in traditional Canary Islands clothing, together with other decorative elements represented and staged in different natural settings in the borough, recreated by local artists.

A wide-ranging exhibition will complete the History and Art Space offering. Visitors will be able to see different objects linked to Christmas, such as musical instruments, photographs, items used to decorate or depict Christmas scenes, clothing, traditional seasonal recipes and more. Through panels specially created for the occasion, and television screens distributed throughout the exhibition, visitors will be able to discover historical texts, lyrics of Christmas carols, New Year verses, and portraits and images of the borough gathered over the years. The exhibition will also feature audio reproductions including a traditional theatrical representation of the Three Kings.

At the end of the event, the Municipal Folklore School Group of Adeje will perform the most traditional and significant Christmas carols of the region.  Entry will be completely free of charge. The El Barranco History and Art Space was created with the clear intention of becoming a place where art and creativity can have a permanent home.
