The most anticipated cheese contest at a global level, The World Cheese Awards, took place last Thursday in Switzerland. This was a record-breaking year with the highest number of cheese entries to date - 5244 entered from 46 different countries around the world. Spain contributed 12% to the number of cheeses in the competition.
Quesería Montesdeoca is the most awarded cheese factory in Tenerife, with 120 awards in international, national, and regional competitions. It has won a total of 39 medals, including a Super Gold, at the World Cheese Awards, making it one of the most awarded cheese factories in Spain.
Queseria Montesdeoca won two medals this year, bronzes for their queso semicurado de vaca/cabra ahumado and queso curado de vaca/cabra con gofio. “Considering the tough competition this year and the wide range of cheese entered, we are truly happy with whatever prize we could get this year in Switzerland,” says Alberto Montesdeoca, Co-Founder of Queseria Montesdeoca.
“This year we strayed from the traditional path of entering strictly goat cheese as we wanted to show off our creamy range of cow and goat cheeses - and it paid off;” he adds. The mature aged cow and goat cheese with gofio has had a stellar performance this year for this artesanal queseria in Adeje. This year alone it has won a gold medal at the Concurso Agrocanarias; Gold medal in Berlin at the Mediterranean Taste Awards and a Bronze medal in France at the Fromage Mondial in Tours.
