This book encourages the spiritual inclusion of LGBT Christians and their families.

Inspired by Amoris Laetitia (Pope Francis) and Ignatian spirituality, a Spanish publication, Amados, creados y soñados prodigiosamente (Loved, Created and Wonderfully Dreamed) highlights the spiritual lives of LGBT people within the Church. It calls for a more welcoming approach and a renewed way of offering pastoral care.

The author, Cristóbal Rodríguez, explores the reasons behind the Church’s exclusion of LGBT people and its impact. He offers practical suggestions for a Church that embraces diversity as a ‘gift from God’. The book invites religious leaders and communities to support real-life situations with understanding and care, both personally and collectively.

It’s a timely reflection for a Church that wants to move forward, and to live out its mission with justice and love.

About the author

Cristóbal Rodríguez Hernández was born in Ifonche, Tenerife. He has been a priest in the Diocese of Tenerife since 2008, with a strong track record in pastoral work with LGBTIQ people.

He holds a doctorate in Spiritual Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (2024). His thesis was titled “¿Cristianos de segunda categoría? Presencia de los creyentes LGBTQ en la Iglesia: acompañamientos e itinerarios de vida cristiana” (‘Second-class Christians? The presence of LGBTQ believers in the Church: spiritual journeys and accompaniment’.)

Pastoral work

  • He served as parish priest in Vallehermoso (La Gomera, 2008–2014) and Breña Alta (La Palma, 2014–2019), where he led inclusive faith-based projects.
  • He coordinated the PADIS project (Pastoral Care for Sexual Diversity) in the Canary Islands (2016–2019) and helped set up the ‘Transgender Spirituality Group’ (2018), working closely with trans women involved in prostitution.
  • He has also worked with CRISMHOM (Madrid) and with LGBT pastoral teams in Italy, focusing on spiritual support rooted in Ignatian discernment.
  • Theological focus
  • His work is grounded in Chapter VIII of Amoris Laetitia and Ignatian spirituality, promoting diversity as a ‘gift from God’.
  • He argues for pastoral care that is adapted to people’s real lives and cultural settings, rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.
  • Recognition
  • The book is endorsed by Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga, who wrote the foreword and stressed the importance of not ignoring LGBT Catholics.
  • Cristóbal’s practical approach is evident in projects like ‘La Casita’ in Tenerife, a spiritual support space for trans women.
