An institutional delegation from Adeje, led by mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and councillor for security Mercedes Vargas Delgado, travelled this past weekend to the German town of Unterhaching to take part in celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of the twinning between the two towns. They were accompanied by Patricia Paulsen, president of the Adeje Volunteer Fire Brigade Association, along with other representatives of the organisation.
The visit coincided with commemorations marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Unterhaching volunteer fire brigade, the very body with which the twinning relationship began. The agreement was signed in December 1989 and officially ratified in February 1990. Since then, ongoing ties have been maintained through cultural, social, sporting and educational exchanges.
Over the weekend, the Adeje delegation was received by the mayor of Unterhaching, Wolfgang Panzer, in an official event that included formal visits, meetings between the fire brigades, and a commemorative parade through the town. Also present were representatives from other European towns twinned with Unterhaching, including Bischofshofen (Austria), Witney (United Kingdom), Le Vésinet (France), and Zywiec (Poland).
Rodríguez Fraga highlighted the role the twinning has played as “a tool for building a united Europe from the local level, based on values such as solidarity, coexistence, and mutual respect.” The mayor also underlined the importance of continuing to strengthen this bond “which began thanks to the relationship between the volunteer fire brigades and today stands as an example of fraternity between European communities.”
The Adeje delegation also took the opportunity to thank their German hosts for their hospitality and warmth, reaffirming their commitment to continuing to strengthen the ties between the two regions.
