Adeje Town Hall's department of Animal Welfare under councillor José Antonio López Delgado, is inviting people to an Open Day at the pet rescue shelter (CIAAD) on Saturday, 8 February. The initiative aims to familiarise the community with the centre’s activities and services, promote responsible adoption, and raise awareness about animal care.
The event will showcase the shelter’s facilities and introduce the visitors to the animals currently housed there. There will be two sessions: from 10am to 1pm and from 3pm to 5pm. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience, visits will be organised in groups with a limited number of participants. Each tour will last approximately one hour and will be conducted through Spanish.
Commitment to animal welfare
The rescue of abandoned or lost domestic animals found in public spaces is carried out 24/7 throughout the year. The shelter itself focuses on the comprehensive care of animals, offering services such as feeding, external veterinary care, vaccinations, sterilisation, walks, basic training, and environmental enrichment.
“The mission of the centre is not only to provide a safe space for the animals that come to our facilities but also to encourage responsible adoption, ensuring they find a suitable and permanent home,” stressed councillor José Antonio López Delgado.
To enhance the well-being of sheltered animals, various improvements have been made to the facility. These include the installation of panels to reduce stress in dogs, the renovation of rest areas with new beds, and the addition of a second yard to encourage exercise and socialisation. These measures have improved animal management and significantly increased adoption rates, which now stand at around 80%.
Responsible adoption and awareness
The adoption process at the shelter includes a preliminary assessment to ensure each dog is matched with the most suitable home. The centre also promotes education on responsible pet ownership and the obligations of pet owners. “Our goal is not only to find homes for the animals but also to raise awareness about the responsibilities involved in caring for them,” added López Delgado.
