Thousands of students have benefited from the ‘Bitácora’ activities

The aim of the project was to help students learn through practical activities

The Adeje department of Education has published details of the Bitácora project which ended recently, having seen 7,000 school students benefit from a range of activities divided into three categories – excursions, cultural activities, and cross-area participation.

The students who took part in trips and excursions visited places like the Montesdeoca cheese farm in Adeje, where there were able to see, first hand, how cheese is made.  The ‘conozco mi barrio’ (getting to know my neighbourhood) project brought the students to local libraries, youth centres, parks, etc.  They also visited the finca Margarita, where they learnt about banana cultivation, had a ‘gofio’ workshop, and enjoyed a tasting session too.   The importance of bees and protecting them was the theme of another excursion, and there were visits to the Ecomuseum in El Tanque, the Anthropology museum, and the Telesforo Bravo visitors centre.

Students had the opportunity to learn more about music during a series of concerts at the school of music; they discovered the role pirates played in Adeje’s past during the book fair.

The cross-departmental activities included contributions from the heritage area, sports, tourism, and communication, where students were able to be ‘journalists for a day’, recording audios, taking photographs and preparing a series of reports.

The ‘Bitácora’ project invites the different education centres in the borough to involve the students in traditional and ethnographic actions, linked to healthy habits, environmental lessons focussing on sustainability, cultural events and more.    The methodology used is specifically designed to assist students in learning through practical experiences.
