The initiative was proposed by a supermarket chain and the Blue Flag organisation

Students from the Costa Adeje International College and the British School Tenerife took part in a series of beach cleaning events organised by the Lidl supermarket chain and the ADEAC, the association for consumer environmental education, who co-ordinate Eco-schools and the Blue Flag in Spain. The initiative took place on three beaches in Tenerife, two in Adeje, La Enramada and Fañabé.
The educational project has been running in both schools since October of last year and students have been working with different materials to find out more about the problems of micro plastics in our oceans, how they affect the state of health of the Canarian biodiversity, and look at possible solutions which can be undertaken individually and collectively.
The project brought the students to the beaches to assist in a clean-up, giving the students to see first-hand evidence of the problems caused by micro plastics in the oceans. Working in groups, monitors worked alongside to help collect rubbish and analyse what they students were picking up, and as they worked, discussing the most sustainable alternatives available.
