The XIX Adeje Book Fair finishes this Saturday with a conference series (translated) ‘Stranger Adeje’, with speakers examining mysteries, legends, and magical traditions of the Canary Islands.

The events will be taking place in the Convento de San Francisco from 10am all day until 7pm. “This will be a combination of history, anthropology, folklore, old beliefs, legends, customs and popular practices which have, to a large degree, fallen into disuse”, says Maria Clavijo Maza, councillor for education and libraries. All talks will be in Spanish.

José Gregorio González Will look at Canarian traditions about witches and fairies of light, Juan Carlos Saavedra will give a talk on the Virgins del Pino and la Candelaria and examine the origins, be they religious or pagan. Fernando Hernández will address the issue of geography and magic, enchanted ravines, magical pathways, etc. in the islands, and historian
Joaquín Carreras Navarro will discuss magical signals in nature. There will be a talk on the role of women in traditional Canarian medicine by anthropologist Grecy Pérez Amores and the day will conclude with a round-table discussion open to the public.

The councillor commented, “This has been an intense week, with a hugely varied programme of events, book launches, talks, workshops, and so much more. We hope that in 2023 we will be able to return to the more traditional Fair setting too.”
