After a two year break the hugely popular event returns on Good Friday with a new format given the on-going Covid restrictions
14 march 2022
The staging of ‘La Pasión’, the Good Friday street theatre, that has become a huge part of the regional celebration of Easter, staged in Adeje, will return this year with a new format, combing cinematic production and live theatre, under the direction of Abraham Gómez Rosales. The decision to change the format was taken by the Adeje council following two years without a performance due to the global pandemic, and this format will be conducted under current Covid restrictions. For the first time too there has been a public casting for the main roles in the productions – this is a production that included hundreds of local extras from Adeje and other parts of Tenerife.
During the months of March and the first weeks of April Abraham Gómez and Mámen Márquez, as assistant director, have been working, with sound and photography directors Gabriel García Fernández-Valdés and René Martín, filming the majority of the scenes of ‘La Pasión’. The project is an initiative of the departments of Culture (under Councillor Maria Clavijo Maza) in partnership with the departments of communication, municipal services and security among others.
The film will be screened on Good Friday, and will lead viewers to the final scenes which will take place live in the Plaza de España. These final scenes will depict Jesus Christ meeting with his mother, and the crucifixion.
The film and final scenes may be watched on television and social media and also on a series of giant screens that will be erected in the Plaza de España for the purpose.
Adeje council engaged the services of theatre director Abraham Gómez given his training, his experience and his work in cinema and theatre. His experience as a teacher is an added skill that he can bring to bear to a project such as this, working with amateurs. He has worked on stage musicals and has won many awards both as an actor and director, as well as writing his own theatre plays.
The council are delighted to bring ‘La Pasión’ to the public following a two year silence, and this event in particular, which has a proud history of participation. This will also be the 25th edition of the event.
