Adeje’s department of culture, under councillor María Clavijo Maza, have released details of this year’s Christmas programme drawn up to include all the necessary health and safety measures given the current situation.
“We are looking at a slow recovery of the kind of seasonal celebration we enjoyed in the past, reviving customs which have been paralysed during the pandemic. All the activities will be adjusted to comply with any recommendations based on the epidemiological situation, and we are hoping to have a better Christmas this year overall”, said the councillor.
Events began this week with the opening of the Advent store in the Asociacion San Juan, and today, December 1st, will see the blessing of the senior citizens nativity scene in the Plaza de España, entitled “Entre tus brazos” or ‘in your arms’. This is open to the public.
The royal pages, will visit all the borough’s neighbourhoods on January 2nd and 3rd to collect letters to the Three Kings and on January 5th the Kings will be driving through all of the neighbourhoods, but unfortunately won’t have time to make any stops. Father Christmas will also visit El Madroñal and Callao Salvaje with some of his elves.
On December 23rd Los Sabandeños will give a Christmas concert in the Plaza de España starting at 8pm, with limited access. Armeñime will also create a public nativity scene with the blessing taking place on December 10th outside the village’s cultural centre and on December 19th the children of the parish will present a living nativity scene.
Christmas markets
On December 27th, 28th and 29th, there will be a market in Plaza Salytien as well as a series of fun activities for all the family, and on December 20th Big Bang will be on stage in concert.
There will be a traditional arts and crafts market in the parkin g beside the School of Music from December 16th to 19th, 5pm - 9pm on Thursday and Friday, and 12 noon – 9pm on Saturday and Sunday. Live music and family events will also take place in parallel.
Music at Christmas
All of the plazas throughout the borough will enjoy carol singing. On December 10th Los Olivos will host the carol singers from the Adeje School of Music folklore group, who will visit Fañabe on December 11th. On December 15th the Imoque cultural association will be singing in Tijoco-La Hoya and on December 16th the Boleros folklore group are in Armeñime.
The Parranda de Piedra Redonda are singing carols in Las Nieves on December 17th, and on the same day Los Menores will enjoy singing from the Imoque association. The Santa Ana seniors’ musical group will decorate their plaza accompanied by carols on December 21st.
Theatre
Theatre also plays a special part in our Christmas celebrations. Burka theatre group will present a theatrical route in the Plaza de España on December 3rd at 9pm and on December 22nd the Teatrapaplus company are in the School of Music auditorium. Camino Viejo Producciones take to the same stage on December 27th, and on December 30th it is the turn of ‘Güicho en Navidad’, a show for all the family.
Other activities
Author Nelson Díaz Frías presents his new work, 'Alzado Guanche' on December 17th in the Convento de Adeje. On December 20th a plaque will be unveiled marking the creation of the La Milagrosa parish in La Hoya, and from December 26th until January 4th (except December 31st and Jan 1st) there will be a free children’s indoor park in the El Galeón sports centre, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm daily.
