The mayors of the boroughs of South Tenerife met in San Miguel de Abona yesterday to assess the general situation of this part of the island ‘post-Covid’.  Taking part were mayors from San Miguel de Abona, Adeje, Arico, Arona, Santiago del Teide, Guía de Isora, Granadilla, Fasnia and Vilaflor de Chasna.

This is the first time the group have met collectively since the start of the pandemic, and reactivates this important forum for cross-borough dialogue and co-governance where relevant. Of course much of the focus was how the region can work together to reactivate the economy post-pandemic.

The meeting assessed the general situation of South Tenerife, and as the mayor of San Miguel de Abona, Arturo González Hernández, presiding over the meeting said, “the colour of  our politics isn’t what matters today, the idea is to work together to solve problems we have in common.”  Those present agreed to form working groups that would meet with all sectors of society – social, commercial, and look to lead future projects that would work to solve issues affecting the region in general.

The mayors agreed that the group would continue to meet every three months, and publish the data gathered from the meetings with the different sector groups.  They would also be in touch with both the Tenerife Cabildo and the regional government with proposals.

On behalf of the group González Hernandez also sent a message of solidarity to the people of La Palma and of help to all those who have and are suffering as a result of the volcanic eruptions..
