The Adeje department of Works and Services, under Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, has announced details of the project to locate containers for the collection of used domestic oil throughout the borough.
The councillor outlined that “we are working towards the reduction of our carbon footprint, also limiting the problems caused by drain blockages, improving water cleaning systems and meeting the needs of our resident population.” Since the introduction of a mobile ‘Eco-point’ residents have been given more information about the need and availability of environmental options such as this one.
The deposits of oil will be converted into biodiesel, generating an ecological fuel, and it is believed up to 98 % of the oil collected will be apt for the conversion.
The used oil should be poured into bottles, preferably plastic bottles (using, for instance, the original container or something similar). However people are asked never to use glass bottles as they my break, causing the oil to spill and contaminate the container and surrounds.
The containers will be placed in different parts of the borough. During this first phase 16 containers will be placed in various locations, some beside recycling containers, others near rubbish containers and the underground recycling units. The public should deposit their bottles of used domestic oil in these containers.
