Adeje Town Hall has decided to suspend the celebration of the Feast of San Sebastián scheduled for today, Monday 19, and tomorrow, Tuesday 20 January, following the decree of three days of official mourning approved by the central Spanish government as a result of the serious railway accident that occurred in Andalusia, in which around fifty people have died, with others still missing and many injured. The announcement was made by the mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, following a meeting with the government team and the Local Police.

The suspension affects both the eve of the feast and the main day of the celebrations, which traditionally bring together thousands of people around the religious and popular events linked to San Sebastián. The government team has taken this decision out of respect for the victims, in solidarity with their families and with the people of Andalusia, and in line with its institutional commitment to people at times of grave events and collective sorrow.

The mayor of Adeje stated that “in view of the scale of the tragedy, in solidarity with the victims and their families, and in compliance with the decree of official mourning, the Town Hall has suspended all scheduled events. This decision has been taken out of respect, institutional responsibility and a commitment to people, understanding that at times like this it is right to accompany collective grief and to act with sensitivity”.

The suspension does not mean the postponement of the events until a later date this year, as this is a festivity with a strong traditional and religious character. Adeje Town Hall has activated an information protocol to communicate the suspension to all those involved, including registered participants with animals, riders, parrandas and musical groups, stallholders, and accredited media, in order to ensure clear and orderly information.
